![]() On your way to the gorge you pass along a beautiful covered bridge. The hike takes about two hours but you can also take a bus from the visitor center that will take you very close to the gorge but there is still some walking to be done in dirt trails before reaching the gorge. Flume Covered Bridge in Franconia Notch park The trail to the gorge is a 2 mile loop that starts and ends at the Flume Visitors Center where you will find a souvenir shop, snacks and a small museum with a beautiful historic Concord Coach . historic Concord Coach at Flume gorge visitor center This waterfall was created in 1883 when a high boulder was washed away during a storm. ![]() You walk so close to it that you will feel the mist and maybe get a bit wet. Huge ferns and trees grow on the damp rock walls making the view as you walk through the gorge very dramatic. It’s a 2 mile hike to the gorge and as you walk walk along it’s base, next to the rushing waters and next to the granite wall that in some parts rises to 80ft you really feel like you are one with this beautiful place. There we visited Flume Gorge, this natural gorge at the base of Mount Liberty extends over 800ft. It was early spring and the foliage was beautiful, as we got closer and the white mountains came into view, with their snow capped peaks it was truly breath taking. On a recent visit to New England we decided to take a drive to see the White Mountains and headed for Franconia Notch State Park. Then there’s a few scenic view points as well as a a wolf den which is an optional boulder climb (great for kids) and then another covered bridge before heading back up toward the visitor center. As you get closer, you start to navigate through it on a boardwalk and at the end is a waterfall. As you continue, you start to get a glimpse of the Flume Gorge and just how tall it is. Then you start to work your way uphill for a while and then you come to Table Rock where you can see water coming over the granite. You initially go down this steeper hill to a ravine which has a covered bridge. There was always something new to see along the way. ![]() When we visited we really weren’t sure what to expect but the best way I can think of to describe the trail is that it’s a clearly marked trail, much like a walking trail, but more like a hiking trail in that it has a variety of hills and some steeper sections on it. The trail itself is a 2 mile loop that goes across two covered bridges, by Table Rock which has water coming down a huge portion of granite, the gorge, a few waterfalls, glacial boulders, and mountain views. 1st Covered Bridge Along the Trail The Flume Gorge Second Covered Bridge Ravine This route is closer to 2 hours without stops, and since we stopped at a few waterfalls along the way, it probably took us closer to 3-4 hours. We instead drove highway 112 from Conway to Lincoln, also known as the Kancamagus Highway, known for its beautiful scenery and waterfalls along the way. It’s about about 1 hour and 15 minutes from there if you take the most direct route (which we didn’t). We had spent the previous day at Mount Washington in New Hampshire which you can read about here. It’s near a few different skiing resorts including Loon Mountain Resort and Canon Mountain Ski Resort and towns that are not far include Woodstock and Lincoln. The Gorge is located in the north central part of New Hampshire. After seeing pictures of it, I couldn’t wait to visit. I had not heard of this spot before doing research while planning our route for our New England Road Trip in the summer of 2021. The Flume Gorge is an 800 foot natural gorge located in Franconia Notch State Park in New Hampshire.
